Laparoscopic Gynecologic Oncology |
| |
Traditionally, gynecologic surgery
for benign or malignant conditions requires major
surgery through a large open abdominal incision.
This approach causes significant post-surgical pain,
an average of 3-4 days in hospital for common procedures,
and typically 4-6 weeks off work or other regular
activities.
Laparoscopic surgery is the main technique used
to perform minimally invasive surgery. Instead of
making a large incision through the skin and underlying
muscles of the abdomen, the surgery is performed
using a narrow, long camera inserted through the
navel and two or three other instruments inserted
through tiny incisions in the abdomen.
The camera is connected to video monitors, and
the abdomen is insufflated with gas, to provide
adequate working space. The surgery is performed
under general anesthesia. The gas is completely
evacuated at the end of the procedure.
Because there is less trauma to the belly, patients
recover much faster than with open surgery with
much less pain.
